Humanitarian Fallout From Nepal’s Constitutional Stalemate


Kathmandu. One month after Nepal’s prime minister dissolved parliament on May 28, IRIN takes a look at the humanitarian consequences of the country’s ongoing constitutional deadlock and the rapid succession of governments, in which five prime ministers have held office in the past four years.

Puspa Basnet


Pushpa Basnet (Nepali: पुष्पा बस्नेत ) is a social worker and the Founder/President of Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) and Butterfly Home, non profit organizations, in Kathmandu, Nepal. She and her organization work to strengthen the rights of children living behind bars with their incarcerated parents.

Her efforts have been recognized by the National and International Media, since she was nominated for the CNN Heroes Award 2012.

Basnet started her career at the age of 21, while she was studying Social Work in the college. While visiting the women prison in Kathmandu, as a part of college assignment, she was dismayed at seeing the conditions of children living with their parents behind bars. She raised 70,000 rupees (roughly $885) from her close friends and sister, and started a non-profit organization -The Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC), to provide a day care program to the children, in 2005.

FBI rescues 79 underage victims of sex trafficking,

For nine years the FBI and National Center for Missing & Exploited Children have partnered on what’s called the Innocence Lost National Initiative, during which law-enforcement agents combing truck stops and websites for kids working sex trade have “recovered” (their word) some 2,200 children. To that total add another 79, per today’s announcement — six of whom were in Dallas.

Prostitution, main cause of spread of AIDS in Nepal

Out of a population of 26 million inhabitants, 70,000 people are affected by autoimmune deficiency, 2,000 of them children. 16% of the cases have contracted the virus through sexual relations with prostitutes, and 21% are wives or partners infected by their husbands or companions.

Nepali women victims of prostitution and slavery in Arab countries

Hundreds of women emigrated for work to Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and other Islamic countries, and have not been heard from for years. Those who succeed in returning home shows signs of physical exhaustion, injuries and are often infected with AIDS.
